In the same way that there are laws of morality, there are laws of beauty that God writes on the heart as well.
"For when the Gentiles who do not have the Law do instinctively the things of the Law, these, not having the Law,
are a law to themselves, in that they show the work of the Law written in their hearts..."
The most striking example of this I have seen came from Bobby McFerrin, the creator of the song "Don't Worry, be Happy". Some years ago, Mr. McFerrin gave an interactive talk where he showed that the pentatonic scale is literally written on the heart of the audience. As Bobby hopped around on stage, the audience, with no prompting, instinctively knew to hum the correct notes from the pentatonic scale that corresponded to each spot he jumped to. The best part was at the very end, where he said, "Regardless of where I am, anwhere, every audience gets that." There are laws of beauty, and God writes them on the heart. |

All of God's creation speaks of the Glory of God. From the setting of the sun to the song of a bird, His creation sings out that there is order and structure to His creation and that it is beautiful. Truth has an order and structure to it. So does beauty. Not every proposition is true. Not every sound is beautiful. Studying music introduces your child to logic and truth in the most fundamental and primal way possible... for music is the logic of beauty. Truth has a structure to it. In logic, this structure consists of a subject and predicate. In music, this structure consists of dissonance and consonance. Subject and predicate, dissonance and consonance, both of these serve the same function...to put the mind on pause while it waits for the completion of a logical or musical thought...the joining of a subject to a predicate in logic to form a proposition, and the joining of a dissonant chord to a consonant chord in music to produce resolution. If I say to you, "True or False...Is Green", your mind will be on pause...waiting for me to tell you what you should affirm or deny "is green". In logic, the missing piece I provide you is called the subject. Perhaps I say "Grass" or perhaps "bread" or "the moon". The subject is what the truth is about. "Is Green" is the predicate, it is what is being affirmed or denied about the subject. You need both to convey a truth. The same is true of Dissonant and Consonant chords...they are the musical analogs to subject and predicate. |
